Narathihapate, King
   (r. 1254-1287)
   The last major king of the Pagan (Bagan) Dynasty. He earned the inglorious title "the king who fled from the Chinese" following an invasion of Upper Burma by an army of Kubhilai Khan, Mongol emperor of China. Refusing to become Kubhilai's tributary, Narathihapate foolishly executed the Mongol ambassador, and was driven from Pagan (Bagan) by the Mongols in 1283, seeking refuge in the delta of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River. In 1287, shorn of his realm, he was assassinated by one of his sons.
